What are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Child receiving dental treatmentTooth-colored fillings are dental restorations crafted from high quality, natural-looking composite resin materials. Traditionally, fillings were made from metal amalgams. These amalgam fillings were crafted outside of the mouth, and they were held in place by notches carved into the sides of healthy tooth structure. Composite resin fillings bond with the natural tooth enamel, so patients are able to preserve all of their healthy, natural structure.

When are Tooth-Colored Fillings Recommended?

Tooth-colored fillings offer a flawless restoration that can be used in a number of situations, including:

How are Tooth-Colored Fillings Placed?

Woman receiving dental examTooth-colored fillings are placed in just one trip to our office. We start by numbing the area to be treated to ensure complete comfort. Then, we carefully remove damaged tooth structure. An etchant material is applied to the prepared surface to create deeper pits and grooves. Then, the putty-like resin is placed onto the tooth where it seeps into the porous structure. Once in place, a low-heat light is used to harden the filling into place. We will polish and seal the filling into place, creating flawless smiles. Because the filling has seeped into the tooth’s natural pits and grooves, it seals the tooth shut. This holds together the parts of the tooth and strengthens the damaged dental structure, reducing the risk for the filling to break away over time. These tooth-colored fillings completely repair damaged teeth, and they will look and feel great for years to come.

How do I Care for My Smile After Filling Placement?

Man receiving dental treatmentFollowing the placement of your tooth-colored filling, you should carefully brush teeth twice each day and floss at least once daily. Like your healthy tooth enamel, composite resin is an absorbent material that can be stained. By limiting your consumption of staining foods and drinks, you’ll keep your newly repaired smile looking better for longer. You should also cease using any tobacco products as this can cause staining and damage to your newly repaired teeth. Finally, don’t forget to visit Ultimate Dental twice a year for checkups and teeth cleanings.
