Of all the dental emergencies you can face, knocking out a permanent tooth is among the scariest. However, before you panic and resign yourself to an unsightly gap in your smile, there’s good news! It may still be possible to save a tooth that has been knocked out if you act quickly. Here’s what you need to know if the unthinkable happens, and how your dentist can help!
TKO: Can I Save My Tooth?
Accidentally knocking out a tooth can be very traumatic, but it doesn’t mean that your tooth is doomed. If it happens, remain calm. Then, gently rinse your mouth with water and clear away any debris. If the tooth is still intact, it may still be possible to reattach it if you act swiftly.
Keep the tooth safe until your dentist can see you by placing it back in your mouth. If it won’t go into the socket, place it between the cheek and your gums, or in a container of milk, your saliva, or the fluid found in a tooth preservation kit. These are available at some pharmacies and department stores. Never store your tooth in water, as this can kill it.
Next, call your emergency dentist for an urgent appointment. Teeth can survive for about an hour outside the socket before they begin to deteriorate, so the sooner you can come in, the better your chances that it can be reimplanted.
When You Arrive at the Dentist
If your dentist can reimplant your tooth, they will make all possible attempts to do so. However, the success of the procedure isn’t guaranteed. It will be temporarily splinted into place until it can survive unsupported, and your dentist will provide you with a detailed list of aftercare instructions to follow during the recovery period.
If your reimplantation fails, your dentist will be happy to discuss replacement options with you, including things like dental bridges, partial dentures, and dental implants.
Remember, unfortunately in life, accidents do happen, but knocking out a permanent tooth doesn’t automatically mean it’s lost forever. With quick action, it could still be possible to safe your tooth and restore your healthy, pain-free smile.
